Pain Is A Personal Thing

David reflects on why comparing one person’s pain with another’s can miss the point — physical, emotional and cognitive pain are experienced personally.

By David Chittenden

Pain is not experienced on a universal scale.

What feels manageable to one person may feel very different to another. In this short reflection, David considers the idea of comparative pain and why another person’s experience cannot simply be measured against our own.

Whether the pain is physical, emotional or cognitive, the experience belongs to the person living through it.
