What Is Active Listening?
David explains active listening as reflecting, summarising and checking our understanding rather than assuming we already know what another person means.
By David Chittenden
Listening is not necessarily the same as understanding.
In this video, David explores active listening as a way of checking what we think we have heard rather than assuming our interpretation is correct.
By reflecting and summarising what another person has said — while leaving room for the possibility that we may have misunderstood — we can give them an opportunity to clarify what they actually mean.
It is a simple idea with relevance across relationships, families, workplaces and everyday conversations.
